The Valley Center varsity boys lacrosse team capped a thrilling season by beating Serra 9-5 in the CIF Division II championship game at Granite Hills High School on Saturday.
The No. 1 seed Jaguars built a 6-2 lead over the No. 2 seed Conquistadors, then kept pace with Serra with three goals in the second half to take the win. Jason Blasius and Ian Leek led the offense with two goals and an assist each, while Jason Brewster scored two goals, John Luna and Andrew Chestnut each had a goal and an assist and Dawson Postuma scored a goal. Valley Center goalie Kyle Stroud made a handful of key saves throughout the game, none more important than his clutch save on a hard Serra shot with 2:09 left in the game that could have given the Conquistadors momentum for a late comeback.
Senior defender Gavin Marcon was presented with the Sportsmanship Award after the game for competing with dignity and respect for his opponents and his community.
