Mighty Mites
The Valley Center Mighty Jaguars lost to the Carlsbad Mighty Lancers 26–0.
The Jaguars could not get the offense going but the defense stepped it up in the second half. Some of the defensive standouts were Christopher Murdock, Eddie Imgrund, Gianni Pinamonti and Sid Weddington.
The Jags played with heart but were simply outmatched by a larger Carlsbad squad.
Junior Midget
Valley Center's Junior Jaguars finished their regular season undefeated at 8–0 with a victory over the Carlsbad Lancers Saturday night at Carlsbad High School.
The Jaguars will enter the first round of playoffs as the No. 1 seed next Saturday against Rancho Penasquitos.
The Jaguars took the opening kickoff and marched down the field on four plays capped off with Nico Manriquez catching a short pass from quarterback Buddy Hall and sprinting around the outside for a touchdown. Early in the second quarter, the Jaguar defense forced a Lancer fumble, giving them good field position.
After moving the ball down to the Lancer ten-yard line, Hall handed off to Matt Doyle on an end around who leaped into the corner of the end zone extending the ball over the pylon for a score. The Lancers answered back with a touchdown of their own making the score 12–6 at intermission.
In the third period, the Jaguar offense found themselves facing a fourth and long at the Lancer 20-yard line. Manriquez took a reverse hand off from fellow running back Dalton Larrabee and then threw to Doyle in the end zone for a touchdown. Ryan Semon converted the kick making the score 20–6. The Lancers once again answered back behind a bruising rushing attack, scoring on a ten yard run and converting the kick to make the score 20–14 at the end of the third quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Jaguar defense sacked Carlsbad's quarterback forcing a fumble recovered by Larrabee who advanced the ball to midfield. A couple of plays later, Hall connected with Doyle deep over the middle for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Forced to the air, the Lancer passing attack eventually misfired due to excellent pass coverage provided by cornerback Arrow Thomas. Turning the ball over on downs, the Lancers could only watch as Valley Center ran out the clock to preserve the win. Leading the Jaguar defense in tackles were Larrabee, Damien DeJesus and Jared Gilster.
