Valley Center’s varsity field hockey team made a run at the championship in the Otay Ranch Tournament, surviving two close games before falling in the final.
The Lady Jaguars also picked up a non-league win on Thursday, as they hosted Helix and rolled to a 4–0 win.

Riding the momentum from the big win, the Lady Jags played Bonita Vista on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the Otay Ranch Tournament and pulled out a 1–0 win in penalty strokes.
Jennifer Brossart scored the game winner for Valley Center, while Marisol Luna made a defensive save in the game and Moran made two saves in penalty strokes to preserve the shutout win.
In the semifinals, the Lady Jaguars came up with another big goal to defeat Otay Ranch, 1–0.
Navarro scored the lone goal, while Moran posted her third straight shutout in goal to propel Valley Center to the finals.
But in the championship game, the Lady Jaguars couldn’t get the offense clicking and suffered a 5–0 loss to San Pasqual.
Moran faced a barrage of shots from the Lady Eagles in the game, making nine saves in the process.
The Lady Jags are now 7–1–2 overall, with a home game against Orange Glen coming on Thursday and an away game at Mission Hills on Friday next on the schedule. Both games are set for 3:15 p.m.
