Looking for their first win since December, the VCHS varsity boys basketball team came within a point of beating Mission Vista in overtime on Wednesday, but on a last-second miscue, the Jaguars suffered a 63-62 loss.
The Jags were ahead throughout the first half, leading by as many as 13 at one point. But the Timberwolves clawed their way back into the game and forced overtime. Mission Vista went ahead by three in the waning seconds of the extra period, but Valley Center had enough time to call a timeout and try for the tying three-pointer. Terrence Becvar's tightly-contested attempt from beyond the arc bounded off the rim and into the hands of Alec Tortes, who instinctively went right back up with the rebound to put in the easy layup with two seconds left.
But the score still left Valley Center down by a point, and the final two seconds ran off the clock to give Mission Vista the win.
