Jaguars fall to Westview in basketball

With only one game on the schedule this week, the Valley Center varsity boys basketball team looked to be on the right track for a win with an outstanding start against Westview, but the Jaguars couldn’t keep up the fast pace in the second half and suffered a disappointing loss.
The Jags hosted the Wolverines last Tuesday night and jumped out to a good lead at halftime, but faded down the stretch and fell, 50–45.
The Jaguars relied on the outside shooting of AJ Broomell in the first quarter, as the senior guard drained a trio of three-pointers en route to 11 points in the opening period.
Leading by a point heading into the second quarter, the Jags started funneling the ball down low to Stehly Reden, and the big center responded with seven points in the quarter. Valley Center’s defense also stepped up and held Westview to just eight points in the quarter, giving the Jaguars a 25–20 lead at the break.
But the Wolverines came alive late in the third quarter, draining three three-pointers and racking up 19 points in the period to take a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars went back to the outside shot down the stretch, but even with two more three-pointers and a total of eight points from Broomell, they couldn’t come back.
Broomell led all scorers with 25 points, while Reden added nine points, Mike McInerny scored five, and Robby Tortes, James Siva and Brett Henderson each had two.
Valley Center is now 8–9 overall and the Jaguars play again on Friday night at Del Norte, then again at home on Saturday night against El Cajon Valley. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
